Son’s first fishing experience

Son’s first fishing experience

I’ve got two young boys, and the future looks bright. My oldest and I took the time on fathers day to get out and try some fishing. He was excited, he had no clue what he was really about to do. At 2 1/2 it’s hard to fathom that you get to go out in a boat, float on some water and pull out these cool little species.

As you can see by is facial expression he was quite excited. This was him yelling out the window as we got prepared to put the boat in the water.

This was the prototypical “here, fishy fishy” moment. The weather was perfectly calm and overcast. There was fish activity all over the lake. We trolled some flies as I had to row and make sure he didn’t get too silly in the boat.

First fish was a crappie, he beamed with excitement as we brought in the line. He wanted to reel in and we actually lost two fish prior to this one doing just that. I finally brought this in and he wanted to touch it, bravely he reached out and touched the slimy fish.

We spent about 1.5 hours on the water, and not once did he ask to go in on his own. I asked him several times and he kept saying no.

The best fish of the day was a small rainbow trout caught on the JP Ross – Beaver Meadow 5′ 2wt it was super fiesty on such a light rod, I personally had a lot of fun with that one.

All in all the day was a great success and something I’ll hopefully remember till I die. I love my boys and I’ll eventually have two great deck hands. 😉

I have been fishing all my life, only started taking it seriously when I moved to Maple Ridge in 2010. I'm a husband and father of two boys, I fish when I can.
